Fear of Failure Remember This One Thing. - When I Grow Up

Fear of Failure Remember This One Thing. - When I Grow Up On Sunday, I ran my first half-marathon: the MORE/FITNESS/SHAPE  Womens Half in Central Park. Never in my life did I think I could run a half-marathon. My time was a bit longer than I wanted, but Im so proud of myself for hitting my overall goal of not walking during the race at all (a pee break water stops excluded). #womenruntheworld #fuckyoucancer A photo posted by Michelle Ward (@whenigrowupcoach) on Apr 19, 2015 at 11:09am PDT On Thursday night, I had an anxiety dream that involved not starting the race until 3:30pm, going off course multiple times, and pinning a hamburger to my shirt so I could eat it when I was done. I woke up Friday with a knot in my stomach that wouldnt go away, and it stayed with me during my very last training run that morning. As I finished my run and came home, I absentmindedly opened my Facebook app, as one does. The very first update was a memory a picture I was tagged in 3 years prior. It was me and my husband on my last day of schmemo.   I had an anxiety dream about the half-marathon on Sunday(!), woke up to Facebook kindly reminding me that I was tagged in this photo of my last round of schmemo 3 years ago today. While Im still nervous about the race, Im now reminded of my strength, how far Ive come, my reason for running. I want to be a healthy role model for my daughter to keep my body moving. I feel so grateful that I get to make this choice. #womenruntheworld #firsthalfmarathon #latergram A photo posted by Michelle Ward (@whenigrowupcoach) on Apr 17, 2015 at 1:42pm PDT It made me feel calm. Strong. Brave. Powerful. If I could get through schmemo, I could finish this freakin run. I still felt nervous, but no longer anxious. I felt ready. It reminded me of a realization I had when I was teaching my CreativeLive class and asked everyone to write down their proudest moments, and what they knew to be true. I heard tale after tale of triumph over adversity  and  strength in the face of trauma. Getting through to the other side of those moments is how we build trust. How we let go. How we initiate change and do the things we never dreamed wed be able to do. Whether its a race or a career change, think of how proud youll be when you cross that finish line, literally or figuratively. Think of how itd feel to start offering services that make you look around and exclaim, Is someone REALLY paying me to do this? Think of how itd feel to sell your first product and hand it to your customer or drop it lovingly in the mailbox. Think of how itd feel to walk in to a new office, take a seat at your new desk, meet your new colleagues and know that this is a positive environment and a meaningful position for you. I know you can feel the thrill, the excitement, the pride. I also know that another voice is coming through, saying, But what if you fail?! And all I have to say is this: The  only thing you can control is showing up. I showed up to my race well before Sunday, by starting a training program months prior and running up to 4 times a week in the bitter cold/snow/rain. I showed up to my business well before I was able to quit my day job, fitting my classes, clients and marketing efforts into  my nights, weekends, lunch breaks, and downtime at work. And if I failed? If I didnt cross the finish line? If my business brought in no clients? Id pick myself back up, make a new commitment, and keep on showing up. And you know what? As counterintuitive as that sounds, Id be stronger, wiser, and more trusting because of it. So, when you fear failure  and its stopping you from pursuing a new or old dream, just remember the worst that can happen is that youll have a newfound sense of pride probably a great story in trying, failing, and picking yourself back up. What will you commit to in your life and/or career right now? What can you start showing up for? Leave it in the comments, and remember to do your best to only focus on what you can control. Job Search Myths

Job Search Myths As a career coach, I hear the same limiting beliefs from all of my clients. The self-doubting talk has to stop This article outlines five job search myths that we muststop believing.I recommend thatyou say the sentences in bold print out loud as you read each paragraph, then vow to never say them again. Ive shared some replacement phrases thatyou can use instead.1. My network is too small and cant help.Your network is much larger than you think. Your current and former colleagues are just the tip of the iceberg. You may have a small network as an account manager, but that isnt the only thing that defines you. Are you a weekend volleyball player? Motherbeibei? Friend? Volunteer? Pianist? You know lots of people through those avenues, in addition to those you know through your professional life, and they should be labeled as important contacts.A client recently shared with me that her close friend is a famous Spanish guitarist. I would never have known or guessed that she had that connection, but its there It would have been a mistake to dismiss her as someone with no connections in the music industry only because she works in human resources. You just never knowReplace with My network is growing and will work for me.2. I dont meet all of the qualifications, so I shouldnt apply. If you think you can do the job, you should apply. If you disqualify yourself, you will surely miss the opportunity. Write a killer cover letter, tailor your resume, apply for the job then find a contact at the company and reiterate your interest. Better yet, see if someone you know can put in a good word for you. Think of the job description as a wish list. It is rare that a candidate checks every single box. Put yourself in the running and work hard to make the case of why you are the best fit for the role.Replace with Im qualified for this job and will tell you why.3. Networking feels inauthentic.Networking is about conversations and getting to know people. Those who ar e being inauthentic are doing it wrong and will struggle to build meaningful and lasting relationships. Be yourself and seek out the organization and events that fit your personality and communication preferences. Do you prefer a lot of structure? Try speed networking. Enjoy a cocktail party? Mixers are an easy fit. Prefer longer conversations? Some organizations, likeSix Degrees Society, create a curated networking experience and match you with others who have similar backgrounds or interests. Your event is out there, I promise, you just need to put in a little effort to find it.Replace with Networking is a great way to build meaningful relationships that will open doors for me.4. I hate asking people for things.People want to help. I repeatpeople want to help I consistently hear from colleagues and clients who are amazed at the responses they receive when they finally ask for what they need. In order to reframe this limiting belief, focus on the experience you have, where you exce l and what you bring to the table. Share what you have to offer and ask that your contacts keep an eye out for someone who might be interested in your set of skills. In this reframe, rather than asking please find me a job, youre painting a picture of the type of harte nuss you can solve. When your contact comes across someone with that problem, they can recommend your services. Youre not asking for help, but asking to provide others with a valuable resource youReplace with I am offering a service and people cant take advantage of my services if they dont know Im available.5. Nothing is working.Interviews and job offers are not the only way to measure the success of your search. Think of your efforts as planting seeds. You never know what seeds will grow, but if you plant enough, one surely will. Have faith that your efforts will pay off as long as you not only plant those seeds, but nurture them, too. A new contact will probably be reluctant to recommend you after your first meeti ng, so follow up with an invitation for coffee and continue to show what a talented professional you are.Replace with Every little step gets me further along my path to success.Everyone experiences thesenasty, self-defeating thoughts. The key is to recognize these mythswhen they appear and remind yourself of the truth.A positive attitude goes a long way in finding and landing your next role, soshow these limiting beliefs the door--Alyson Garrido is passionate about helping women advance their careers and find jobs they will enjoy. Making the Case for a Case Study - Spark Hire

Making the Case for a Case Study - Spark HireMany companies today are turning to behavioral based interviewing, also called behavior description interviewing, or BDI. In this kind of interviewing, questions generally require the candidate to describe a situation they have faced personally and interviewers focus on their specific response to these cases. A typical BDI question could be something like, Tell us about a time when you disagreed with your boss. What did you do? The general idea and goal behind this type of interviewing is that those doing the hiring might be able to predict how a candidate would respond to situations they might face in the future, should they be asked to join the company. If youre interested in a mora in-depth look at this kind of interviewing, you can check out my previous post here. While this sort of interviewing can prove useful in certain hiring situations, the issue often faced is that the answers received are based on the candidates singular recall o f the events which took place. Namely, with no one to corroborate or disagree with the story, it is difficult at times to tell if the candidate is truthfully representing the situation or their actions in that situation.Hiring managers and a hiring committee can attempt to avoid this by using a case study. This usually consists of a predetermined, hypothetical situation that is relevant to the position being applied for. The situation is laid in front of the candidate and they are asked to respond to it as they see fit.Writing for The Chronicle of Higher Education, John R. Lubker says this method of interviewing was used successfully to hire a new dean for the university where he was previously holding the interim dean position. Their case study involved the head of a department who was eligible for the status of full professor and denied the promotion. The candidates were given time to become familiar with the case and then asked to respond to the issues that arose. In Lubkers view , the case-study approach provides a behavioral window through which to view your potential hire in action. Like any assessment, it should not be used alone but it can contribute greatly to the success of your search. This method of interviewing can be adapted to just about any job interview within any industry. It can be more time-consuming for both the candidate and the interviewers, as well. But coupled with a few behavioral based questions, it can help to create a more complete picture of how a candidate has performed in the past and how they may perform in the future.Do you use case studies in your interviewing process?
